Obituary of Howard Lee Stack

Howard Lee Stack, age 96, passed away November 29, 2017 at Elmcroft Senior Living in Raleigh, NC. He was born on August 3, 1921 in Colfax, NC to Benjamin (Benny) and Mary Hastings Stack. The funeral service will be held in Westminster Gardens Colonial Mausoleum on Saturday December 2, 2017 at 11 am. Howard graduated from Colfax High School in 1940. He enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve and served from 1942-1945 during WW II. He participated in five enemy invasions, including North Africa, Sicily, Northern (D-Day) and Southern France, and Okinawa while serving aboard the USS Dorothea L. Dix. He received seven military awards, including five bronze stars, for his military service. After the war Howard returned to Colfax where he farmed, and later moved to Greensboro where he sold automobiles, and worked as a brakeman and conductor for the Norfolk and Southern Railroad. Howard married Mary Henry Jones in Oak Ridge, NC They remained married for 59 years until her death. Howard was a member of Mount Pisgah Church in Greensboro. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as tending his vegetable gardens, which always exceeded his needs, sharing the surplus with many of his friends and family. Howard was preceded in death by his wife and by his parents, Benjamin Houghton Stack and Mary Amanda Hastings, and by his brothers, Wayne, Dale (Maxine), and Jerold Stack and his sister Pearle Stack. Howard is survived by his sons Van (Margaret) of Florence, AL and Frank (Anita) of Raleigh, NC. He is also survived by his sister Kathleen (Marvin, deceased) Atchison of Colfax. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Michael Stack of Memphis, TN, Allison Stack of Florence, AL, Vanessa (Jeremy) Reese of Wilmington, NC and Hayden (Mark) Lindsey of Wake Forest, NC; eight great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Friday December 1, from 6 pm until 8 pm at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Transitions Lifecare, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607, or to Mount Pisgah Church, 2600 Pisgah Church Rd., Greensboro, NC 27455.
