Wesley Roland Root

Wesley Roland Root, 75, died January 19, 2021.

Wes was born September 24, 1945 to the late Edwin S. Root, Sr. and Nellie Emma Keck Root. He grew up in Radium, Kansas and graduated from Radium High School in 1963. He attended the University of Kansas, served in the United States Army at Fort Huachuca, Arizona from 1966 to 1968, and received his Bachelor’s degree from Wichita State University in 1975. He earned a PhD in Plant Breeding and Plant Genetics at the University of Wisconsin in 1979.

Wes worked for several international agricultural research institutes in Burkina Faso and Nigeria, and traveled extensively in North America, Africa, Europe, South America and Asia. He settled in Greensboro, NC in 1989, and later retired from Guilford County Mental Health in 2011.

He volunteered for several years after retirement as a guardian ad-litem for youth in foster care. He enjoyed gardening, home improvement, hiking, travel and gambling in Las Vegas.

Wes is survived by his daughter, Mahin Root Manley; granddaughter, Zahra Goodwin; former wife, Brenda Randolph Root Berryhill; brother, Simon Root and Barbara of Lyons, KS; and had numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends including Jan, Dexter, Derrick, John and Geoff.
