Elly excelled academically exploring her love for literature and English at Montclair State. In 1948 Eleanor Flynn became Eleanor Bersin when she married the love of her life, George Bersin of New York, New York. She cherished her date nights walking across the George Washington Bridge. They loved raising their 3 children. There were many backyard BBQ’s, Lake George weekends and summer excursions to the Jersey Shore!

Elly made many friends in Bergenfield through her participation with her children in Cub Scouts, Little League, Girl Scouts, as a substitute teacher at St. John’s Elementary School as well as a member of St. John’s Parish. She continued joyful participation in functions at Immaculate Heart Academy with her daughters during their high school years.

Elly was lucky in love not once, but twice, when she married Warren Spiel in 1986. Life’s journey brought her to Bay Head where she loved the salt air and ocean breeze. She continued community service by being an active member of the Point Pleasant Women’s Club, past president and member of the Women’s Republican Club of Mantoloking and Bay Head and a passionate vocalist in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church choir. Elly was selfless and volunteered many hours to St. Gregory’s Pantry of Point Pleasant Beach as well as various fundraising events.

Elly was a fearless adventurer! Oh how she loved to drive! If there was a reason to go, nothing would stop her. You could always find her where family and friends gathered. Her friendships were deep and she cultivated them with love and care. Elly was especially proud of her participation in “Squad 2” sports class at Leonia High where she remained lifelong friends with her teammates. Eleanor never said an unkind word about any person. She was joyous and kind, always smiling. Elly will always be remembered for her grace and elegance.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Keda, Maura and all Hospice angels who guided mom with the kindest and most gentle care.
