Obituary of Harold Fleming Pitts

Harold Fleming Pitts passed peacefully May 23, 2021 at Friend's Home West in Greensboro, NC.

 

He was born February 27, 1924 in Clinton, S.C., the son of Roy and Lydie Pitts.  He graduated from Clinton High School and Clemson University, and served in the U.S. Armed Forces in WWII.  He had an accomplished career as an Electrical Engineer with Southern Electric Service Co. and Electric Service and Sales Inc.

 

Harold was a pillar of the Greensboro Community and a leader in advocacy against hunger. Harold believed his “gift of spirit” was servitude. He was a Charter member of Christ United Methodist Church in Greensboro, NC. His main interest was hunger related projects in Greensboro and beyond. He was the coordinator and active participant of CROP HUNGER WALK at Christ United Methodist Church for many years, and coordinated CROP WALK at Friends Home West.  Harold was co-founder of the church’s Bolivia Mission Project. He has been involved with Greensboro Urban Ministry since 1980, and has worked with Habitat for Humanity, Hurricane Relief, Bread for the World, and Mobile Meals.

 

Harold was a member of the Hamilton Lakes Lions Club where he had perfect attendance for 58 years, and chaired the club's work with the blind, helping to provide eye glasses for the underprivileged. He won numerous awards for his volunteer work and service including WFMY.2's "2 Those Who Care".

 

Harold was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and a man of strong faith. His values have positively impacted the lives of his children and grandchildren.  He was a wonderful role model for good health and happiness. He was an avid tennis player for more than 65 years, winning the state senior doubles title many times, and was a finalist in the National Senior Games three times.

 

He is preceded in death by his wife Mary Thomas Shedd Pitts and six siblings. 

 

Survivors include his daughters Linda Pitts, Gayle Micca and husband Salvatore, Eron Schell and husband Johnny,  Emmie Tharrington and husband Roger; grandchildren, Amanda Martin, Michelle Micca, Bryce Tharrington,  Lydia Micca, Will Schell,  Kayla Tharrington, Sam Schell; and great-grandchildren Kendall and Griffin Martin.

 

A memorial service will be held 2:00PM Friday, June 25, 2021 at Christ United Methodist Church.  Donations can be made to Greensboro Urban Ministry or Christ United Methodist Church.
