Obituary of Patricia "Pat" Freund Wakeley

Patricia “Pat” Freund Wakeley, 86, of Greensboro, NC, formerly of Hendersonville, NC, passed away Saturday, August 14, 2021, at her residence. 

Pat was born in Detroit, MI, to Roger Henry Freund and Frances Wakeley Freund. She graduated from East High School in Salt Lake City, UT, before receiving a degree in English from Hiram College in 1956. Following her retirement from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt where she was a textbook editor, she achieved her Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the University of Southern Maine in 2006. 

Throughout her life, Pat’s hobbies included sewing, singing in choir, reading, hiking, writing, traveling, and playing the recorder. Pat will be remembered for her unique sense of humor, courage, love of the American Southwest, and adventurous spirit. She was kindhearted, easy to love, cheerful in disposition, and always looked at life as a succession of interesting experiences. 

Pat leaves behind her siblings, Genie Perigo of New Mexico and Ernie Freund of Minnesota; her children, John Hatch of California, Elizabeth Marchand of North Carolina, and Susan Moscaritolo of Oregon. 

She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Kaia Alderson of New York, Alex Alderson, Caleb Alderson, and Thaddeus Victor of Oregon, Raymond Marchand, Katherine Marchand, and Sarah Marchand of North Carolina; and two great-grandchildren, Rafe Alderson of New York and Benji Victor of Oregon; as well as several nieces and nephews. 

A funeral service will be held at 11:00AM Saturday, August 28, 2021, at the Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Services Kernersville Chapel with Mary Kay Glazer officiating. A private inurnment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park.
