Obituary of Darrell Whitaker

Mr. Darrell Gene Whitaker, 71, of Greensboro, passed away Sunday, October 25, 2009, at Wesley Long Hospital. Darrell was born in Moore County on July 19, 1938, the son of Roy Lee and Naomi Bibey Whitaker. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Whitsett and was a U.S. Navy Veteran. Darrell retired from Burlington Industries after 38 years of service and then became employed with Home Depot on Battleground Avenue. He was a former member of the Civitan and Lions Clubs and was a sports enthusiast. Darrell played football with Candor High School when they won the 1956 state football championship. He was a former youth baseball coach and served as announcer for the Northwest High School JV football and Varsity basketball teams. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Gerald and Tony Whitaker. Surviving are his wife, Doris Ussery Whitaker, of the home; a daughter, Donna Dalton (Frank) of Hurt, Va.; a son, Donny Whitaker (Paula) of Burlington; three brothers, Leroy, Danny and Ricky Whitaker; four grandchildren, Drew Puckette of Sterling, Va., Zach Puckette of Hurt, Va., and Mackenzie Whitaker and Jordyn Whitaker, of Burlington, N.C. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at First Baptist Church of Whitsett with Pastor Tim Stevens officiating. Interment with military honors will be held in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Lambeth- Troxler Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Gateway Education Center, 3205 East Wendover Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405.
