Obituary of George Newman

A native of Greensboro, George Franklin Newman III, 63, died August 27. Son of the late George F. Newman Jr. & June S. Newman, and grandson of the late George F. Newman, founder of Newman Machine Company, established in Greensboro in 1906. Mr. Newman attended Woodberry Forest School in Virginia. While there, he was chosen to attend select short courses in advanced mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was a finalist for Morehead Scholarship and a graduate of the University of North Carolina. In Atlanta, he attended the School of Law at Emory University and received an MBA degree from Georgia Tech. Mr. Newman engaged in various international business enterprises and for many years resided in Europe and the Caribbean. Truly one-of-a-kind, 'Jeff', as he was known most of his life, will be remembered for his deep, resonating laugh, sharp intellect and a wide-ranging curiosity. He enjoyed living life to the fullest. Newman Machine is an international leader in the manufacture of woodworking & textile machinery. In 1955, George F. Newman Jr. purchased Baxter D. Whitney & Son of Winchendon, Massachusetts, founded in 1837, a leading firm in the same and related business. Combined business continues in operation under the name Newman-Whitney. Mr. Newman is survived by his daughter, Caroline E. (Lisa) Newman Francisco and husband, George, of Houston, and his aunt, Ruth S. Levy, of New York City. There will be a visitation at 1:30 p.m. Friday, September 24, at Lambeth Troxler Funeral Home in Greensboro. A Graveside service will be held at 2:30 at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
