Obituary of Roger Willis

Kernersville-Roger Lee “Coach” Willis, 66, passed away suddenly at his home August 23, 2011. Funeral services celebrating his life will be held 11:00AM Friday August 26, 2011 at Main Street United Methodist Church with Dr. Jeff Patterson, Rev. Rick Carter, and Rev. Dale Hilton officiating. A native of Carter County, Tennessee, Roger was the son of the late Helen Peters Willis and James Lee Willis. He obtained his Masters Degree in Industrial Education Engineering from East Tennessee State University. It was during his college days when he met his wife Nancy Peck Willis, who survives. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church where he served on numerous committees, both with the church and the community. Roger was a former member of the Board of Directors of The Shepherd’s Center, and currently served on the board of Family Promise. He also was a member of the Exchange Club of Kernersville. Roger served as Chairperson for the Main Street United Methodist Church Golf Tournament, as he was an avid golfer. In addition to his parents, he also was preceded in death by his brother Gary Edwin Willis. Survivors include his loving wife of 41 years, Nancy P. Willis of the home; sister Judy W. Shelton and Earl of Asheville; nephew Ryan Willis of Washington, D.C.; niece Andrea Shelton of Raleigh; mother-in-law Evelyn P. Manley of Texas; sister-in-laws Gloria Willis of Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia, and Alice Davis and Richard of Allen, Texas; brother-in-laws Larry Peck and Janice of Nashville, Tennessee, and Carl Peck and Darlene of New Market, Tennessee; and several other nieces, nephews, extended family, and a host of friends who will miss him dearly. The family will visit with friends from 5-8PM Thursday evening at the church and other times at the home.
