Obituary of Edna Mendenhall Cartner

Kernersville-EDNA FRANCES MENDENHALL CARTNER, known to most as Mama Edna or Miss Edna, age 79, of Kernersville, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on August 11, 2011 at Hospice Home at High Point. A native of Yadkin County, North Carolina, Edna was born on April 9, 1932, a daughter of the late Calvin Faw Mendenhall and George Alexander and Sybilla Viola Mendenhall Carpenter. She moved to Winston-Salem as a young child and had resided in Kernersville for the past 37 years. She spent most of her working career with Southern Bell and AT&T, retiring in 1989. For the past 22 years, she worked part-time at Young’s Florist in Kernersville. She was an active member of Kernersville Wesleyan Church where she was known for the wonderful church meals she prepared. She loved going to the North Carolina coast and her most favorite hobbies were reading and jigsaw puzzles. Surviving is her husband, Billie Lee Cartner, of the home, a daughter, Terri L. Cartner of High Point and her partner, Nina Heard; one brother, Donald E. Carpenter and wife Carol of Kernersville; her most special niece, Donna Carpenter Peterson of Kernersville, and her aunt Erlene Whitney of Winston-Salem. She is also survived by a large extended family. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Kermit Mendenhall and her sister, Violet Mae Mendenhall Simpson. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 pm on Friday, August 12, 2011 at Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Service, 213 W. Mountain Street in Kernersville. A service of celebration for Edna’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 13, 2011 at Kernersville Wesleyan Church with the Reverend J. Dwight Cartner, the Reverend Phil Hulin, and the Reverend Virginia Herring officiating. Entombment will take place following the service at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory in Kernersville.
