The service for Carey was wonderful! It was a huge testament to his friendship and nature by the number of people whose lives he touched in one way or the other! Like I said before, he was the kind of friend that when you were with him you felt like you were the most important person in the world! He made everyone smile and through both of these things, was loved by many and will be missed by many!!! Will continue to pray for the family as they move forward. God bless!!

I did one of the hardest things I'll ever do in my life today and that was to say goodbye to my FOREVER friend, Carey Atkins. I was lucky enough to have shared many many wonderful memories with Carey. I was able to see all of his family, with whom I also shared many wonderful memories with. Carey, please know that you will NEVER be forgetten. You will ALWAYS have a VERY VERY special place in my heart. Enjoy your plate of french fries and your old milwaukee Bug. (He probably thought I forgot about that). You will be truly missed. I LOVE YOU AND ALWAYS WILL!!!!! Rest In Peace.

Sorry to hear about Carey's passing. He was a unique person who everyone in Kernersville knew. We never know when our time is up....We spent many years as friends, he was a big part of our family. RIP, God bless you, and our thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Together, off and on for 15 years. What a journey, we loved each other so much. I guess this is the adventure you were telling me about. Rest in peace my soul-mate. I will miss you! And to all of Carey's family I'm so sorry for your loss and you're in my prayers.

I just want to start by saying to all of Carey's family that my thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Carey was a very special person and was a blast to be around. You NEVER had a dull moment when Carey was around. His smile would light up a room. His personality was great. His heart was made of gold. He was just a great guy in general. I was lucky enough to have known Carey for so many years and shared so many great memories with him and his family. I know they are suffering a great loss. Carey was unforgettable! He touched a lot of people's lives in a lot of different ways. Carey lived his life to the fullest and I think we could all learn a lesson from Carey. I think he taught us that you NEVER know how much time you have so take advantage of every opportunity you have to enjoy life and live it the way you want to because you never know when you're last minute on earth will come and you have to leave loved ones behind. You will truly be missed Carey, the world just won't be the same without you in it!!!!!!!!!!!! REST IN PEACE, I LOVE YOU!

I was so shocked to hear about Carey. I loved Carey like a little brother. He was so very kind, sweet and always funny. He was crazy about Willie Nelson and Jimmy Buffet. The kid always did have good taste. He was crazy about my sister Beanie for 6 years and would always ask everytime he saw me if I had gotten rid of my boyfriend.God speed Carey, and please give our love to all who have gone before us. To all of Carey's family...our prayers are with you and remember that those who understand your loss are nearby and are here in your time of sorrow.

I never saw my uncle Carey without a smile on his face. Even when he was hurting, he still had a grin and a wink for everyone around him. He is free now, but lives on here in everyone that remembers him and celebrates his life.
06/29/2011 - Retha (Jeanne) Linville
My thoughts and prayers go out to each of the family members and friends. Carey will truly be missed. I will never forget his amazing personality and his smile that lit up the world! Go to Jesus in peace, Carey.

You have been in my life since I was 10 now I'm 25. And it doesn't seem long enough. You were like a father to me. You taught me how to cut in and now I'm a pro thanks to you. You always could make me laugh. And life will be boring now without you in it. You were always the life of the party. I will always remember the good times and I am going to miss you so much. You had the biggest heart of any man I know. And I want to thank you for loving my mom and I like you did. If im having a bad day I'll just think of your laugh and smile. I guess now mom will take your job of walking me down the aisle if I ever get married. I know you're in a better place now and will never suffer again. I love you!! To Carey's family I am so very sorry for your loss. I am going to miss him so much. He was amazing. And has been a big part of my life.

I met Cary about 18 years ago through my then husband Robin McNeill. Cary was a wonder person who would always lift you up if you were sad. I had the pleasure of picking up our friendship again in the last several months. He often talked about the love of his family, his journals, and of course going sailing. In fact I just received a text from him a couple of weeks ago telling me of a trip he was taking. He will be greatly missed!!!

What A Life - June 30, 11
Posted: June 30, 2011 | Last Revised: June 30, 2011
Carey and I dated for 6 years or so, I was 13 he was 14 when we met in school, (Kernersville Jr. High). We were together until I was 18, him 19. We experienced a LOT while we were together and survived it all. (That in itself is AMAZING to me considering some of the crazy things we use to get into). I always had a great time with Carey. No matter where we went or what we did, we loved every minute of it. We always hung out with our friends, going to the Dan River or Hanging Rock. We would climb into Carey's little blue Datsun truck, and it would be full of our friends, Erky, Bird, Randy, and me and Carey. We always did things on the spur of the moment which I think made our times more fun, very rarely made plans to do things like this, just threw some things together and took off. Listening to Willie Nelson,Jimmy Buffett, David Allen Coe, Jackson Brown just to name a few, on our way to our adventure, because that's exactly what it was, an adventure. You never knew what you were going to get into with Carey, it was always something new and different, but you were always guaranteed to have a great time doing it, whatever "it" was. I've been lucky enough to have had someone like Carey, no, not (someone like Carey, because thats just it, there is no one like Carey), in my life to have shared all of these wonderful memories with. We were still close after all of these years. I didn't get to see Carey a lot throughout the years, but I NEVER forgot about him, and I NEVER will. He was truly ONE OF A KIND! I could sit here and share the memories I have with Carey but it would take me FOREVER to even get close to all of the great times we had and all the wonderful things we did together. So for now I'll just say, SAIL ON BUG, I LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU TERRIBLY!!!!!!!!!

He was always so dang nice!!

I met Carey at the same time I met my then husband Robin about 19 years ago. When I was pregnant, we would go to see Carey and he would spend hours rubbing my feet with lotion and talking to my belly. After my daughter was born, I used to tease Carey and tell him she would be graduating High School before he met her. I used to always wonder where the heck he was gonna sail that sailboat he had in his carport in Kernersville. I would ask him about it everytime I saw him. We would talk off and on through out the years. I would go visit Carey and no matter how sad or upset I might be, he ALWAYS managed to make me smile. We would talk for hours. When I would leave his house my stomach would hurt so much from laughing!! Last September, he requested my friendship on FACEBOOK and it had been awhile but I would always ask about him. He would call me or text me and through his crazy words always make me laugh. In our 19 year friendship that was ALWAYS a constant. In April he finally met my daughter. She is now a senior in High School!! She thought Carey was the coolest person!! When we visited with him he talked of his journals, his life adventures, sailing, music and Key West, his family and his friends. I will always have that evening we spent with him!! I'm so glad my daughter got to meet him because I couldn't describe this wonderful unique friend named Carey Atkins. She got to see him for herself. Again I asked him of the sailboat that he had kept in his carport and he pointed to the window where an anchor was hanging and said thats all he had left of it. I will forever remember my funny friend Carey. As I'm sure all his friends and family will. He had a great way of making you feel you were his "best" friend when he was with you. But he had too much kindness and too big of a heart for only one friend. We will miss you and know you finally have put that sailboat in the water!!! Enjoy my friend!!!!
