Obituary of Evelyn Snyder

Biography Kernersville - Evelyn Fields Snyder, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and minister, died March 3, 2011 at her home, surrounded by family. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, March 5, 2011 at 11:00AM at Main Street United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. A native of Greensboro, Evelyn was the daughter of the late Lilly and Hal Fields, and she grew up in the Methodist Church. She attended Bessemer High School, and then graduated from Greensboro College in 1948 with a degree in religious education. After graduation, she became director of Christian education at College Place United Methodist Church in Greensboro. In 1998, she received the college alumni association's highest honor, the Distinguished Alumni Award. Education was an important part of her life, and she continued her studies at Duke University Divinity School in 1970. Her education afforded her the opportunity to pioneer a leadership role for women in the United Methodist Church. Evelyn was employed by the Western North Carolina Conference and preached at churches across the state. She also gave a sermon at the Upper Room in Nashville, TN. Throughout her life, she was an active member of the community, underscoring her zest for life and her desire to always be surrounded by loved ones. She served as an officer and president of many organizations, including the Women's Club, United Methodist Women and the Literary Club in Thomasville. She regarded one of her greatest joys as being an advisor, confidant and inspiration in her role as wife, mother and grandmother. Her ever-present smile brought comfort and joy to those around her, and at the frequent family celebrations. Evelyn loved spending time at High Rock Lake with her adoring husband and family during the summers, creating wonderful family memories. Survivors include her husband of more than 60 years, Vernon Gilbert Snyder, Jr.; her mother-in-law Evelyn Peacock Snyder age 106; brother-in-law James Snyder and Teresa; children and their spouses Jessica and Vernon Snyder of Greenville, Lyn and Rick Worf of Winston-Salem, and Mary Beth and John Snyder of Charlotte; grandchildren Rich Worf, Jr., Caroline Worf Long, Bert Snyder, Allison Snyder, Field Snyder, Patrick Snyder, and Ward Snyder.
