Catherine Smith

Obituary of Catherine Turner Smith

On Sunday, November 24, 2019, Catherine Turner Smith, 62, passed away peacefully at her home after a courageous battle against ALS. Her devoted husband, Steve Smith, was by her side.

Cathy was born to Kenneth and Rebecca Turner on November 29, 1956 in High Point, and grew up in Jamestown, NC with her two brothers, Marvin and David Turner. She met her husband, Steve Smith, at Ragsdale High School in 1974. Cathy graduated from Ragsdale in 1975 and went on to graduate from East Carolina University (ECU) in 1979 and was a proud Pirate.

Cathy and Steve married on September 20, 1980. Cathy became a mother to Zach Smith in 1986, and Sarah followed in 1989. Cathy was a devoted wife and mother, and her family was the greatest joy in her life. Cathy treasured many dear friends and loved spending time on her patio enjoying the company of these loved ones and her pets. Cathy was an avid sports fan, and was a passionate fan of the Dallas Cowboys, Boston Red Sox, and ECU Pirates. Music, friends, good food and laughter surrounded Cathy, and she brought joy to the life of everyone who knew her. Cathy enjoyed a successful career in the commercial cabinet business and retired from Amcase in April 2019 after fifteen years spent alongside dear colleagues. Her unfailing faith in Christ is an inspiration to those who knew her, and her church family was a source of comfort and joy in recent months and years. Cathy lived the last year of her life since her diagnosis with ALS as she lived all the years before – full of music, adventures, family, friendship, and grace.

Cathy was preceded in death by her parents; Kenneth and Rebecca Turner and father-in-law, Dewey Smith. Surviving are husband, Steve Smith; son, Zachary Smith and wife Amanda; daughter, Sarah Billington and husband Matthew; brother, Marvin Turner and wife Elizabeth; brother, David Turner; niece, Meredith Hughes and husband Travis; great-nephew Turner Hughes and mother-in-law, Nancy Smith.
