Obituary of Carter Thomas "Tom" Mathews

Carter Thomas “Tom” Mathews, 68, of Belmont, NC passed away at his residence with his wife and two sons by his side Friday May 24, 2019.

Celebration of Life Services will be at Main Street United Methodist Church in Kernersville, NC on Saturday June 1, 2019 at 3:00PM with Rev. Rick Carter officiating.

A native of Ypsilanti, Michigan, Tom was the husband of over 44 years to Cheryl Stoddard Mathews and the son of the late William Frances Mathews and Judith Christine England Mathews. He retired after 38 years with Lorillard Tobacco Co., Greensboro, NC. Tom coached many Kernersville youth in both soccer and baseball. He was an avid runner, and enjoyed singing in the choir at Main Street UMC for over 10 years. He was a diehard Michigan Wolverine football and basketball fan.

Survivors include his wife, Cheryl of the home; sons, Tom Mathews and wife, Heather of Belmont, NC, and Toby Mathews and wife, Jess of Advance, NC; grandchildren, Teagan, Carrington, and Liam; sisters, Cathy Peer, and Cindy Lademan and husband, Doug; brother-in-law, Emmons “Moe” Peer; sister-in-law, Gloria Mathews; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his brother, Craig Mathews.
