Obituary of Julie Elizabeth Nelsen

Julie Elizabeth Sligh Nelsen passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at her home in Oak Ridge, North Carolina.  She was born on August 8, 1956 in Hartsville, South Carolina to Aliher Ingram Sligh and Cecil Eugene Sligh, Sr.

 She graduated from Columbia College in Columbia, South Carolina and continued her education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to obtain a Masters in Speech Pathology.  She spent 30+ years working with children through Speech/Language programs in various locations both public and private. 

Julie became a Christian at an early age and her love for Jesus never faded in her 63 years on earth. She was an active member of Pathways Church and loved teaching preschoolers about the love of Jesus. Her cancer led her to be a proponent of healthy eating and she loved sharing her knowledge with all who would listen. She enjoyed vacations to the beach and shopping with her sisters Jan and Jane. She got the sailing bug early in her life and enjoyed being on the water with the wind in the sails. She especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas Edward Nelsen; daughters, Johanna Nelsen Gonzalez (Enrique) and Toni Mumm (Rob); son, Edward Eugene Nelsen; brother, Cecil Eugene Sligh, Jr. (Jane); sister, Jan Sligh Denton; grandchildren, Caitlin Braswell, Brandi Combest, Andrew Combest, Alissa Mumm, Keavin Mumm, Corey Mumm; and great grandchildren, Hunter Danielsen, Thomas Hepler and Avery Hepler.

A celebration of her life will be Thursday, October 31, 2019, 3:00 pm, at Pathways Church Greensboro Campus, 4530 Jessup Grove Road, Greensboro, NC 27410. The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm-3:00 pm prior to the service.
