Obituary of William Vernon

Mr. William A. Vernon Jr., 90, of Greensboro, died at his home, Monday, August 3, 2009. Mass will be held 12:00 pm Wednesday, August 5th, at St. Benedicts Catholic Church, North Elm and Smith Street, in Greensboro. Burial will follow at Overlook Cemetery, in Eden. Mr. Vernon was born in Eden (Leaksville), NC, August 12, 1918, to Abdon and Virginia Kendrick Vernon. He graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in 1940 and received his Masters Degree in Education from Queens College of the University of New York City. He served in the US Navy during WWII. He attended the US Merchant Marine Academy, Port Washington, NY (kings Point) in 1942-1943 as a cadet midshipman (including sea duty). He was also appointed First Officer in the Army Transport Service and completed ATS Marine Officer School, NYC, serving on ATS-T25 vessel out of Newport News, VA. Mr. Vernon is survived by his wife of over 65 years, Myrtle R. Vernon; a son, William A. Vernon III and wife Connie, of Hampton, VA; Grandchildren, Scott William Vernon and wife Candice, of Williamsburg and Megan Virginia Vernon, of Richmond, VA; a great-granddaughter, Elise Noelle Vernon, of Hampton, VA. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Tuesday, August 4th, with a Rosary Recitation at 7 pm. Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Service is assisting the Vernon family.
