Obituary of Charles Evin Coleman

Charles Evin Coleman, 88, of Summerfield, died peacefully at his home and went to be with his Heavenly Father on September 11, 2013. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 14 at Reedy Fork Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. Charles was born on August 15, 1925 in Wilkes County to Evin Andrew and Ola Gregory Coleman. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Young Henry Coleman. He is survived by the love of his life, Velma Somers Coleman; they were married for 63 years. He was a wonderful father to his daughters, Teresa Coleman Miller of Summerfield and Katrina Coleman Whitt and son-in-law, Jay Whitt of Greensboro. He delighted in his four grandsons, who were his "buddies," Grant Coleman Miller and wife, Morgan, of Burke, VA, Joseph Hunter Whitt and wife, Hunter Nicole, of Mooresville, Jordan Quinn Miller of Brooklyn, NY, and Parker Coleman Whitt of Greensboro. He enjoyed visits from his "precious" great-granddaughter, Brynn Coleman Miller, of Burke. He is also survived by a sister, Rachel Coleman Campbell of Statesville, and a sister-in-law, Nada Pardue Coleman of Greensboro. After Charles graduated from Union Grove High School, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was a heavy machine gunner in the Yankee Division in the Battle of the Bulge and served in post-war Germany and Austria. He was awarded a Purple Heart. After the war, he moved to Greensboro and worked as a supervisor in Cone Mills Revolution Rayon Plant. He retired from Lorillard after working for 32 years as an adjuster. Charles was an active member of Reedy Fork Baptist Church for 52 years, serving as a trustee for several years.
