Obituary of Robert Ernest Phillips

Mr. Robert Ernest Phillips, 90, died Friday, April 12, 2013 following several years of declining health, surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Home, with the Reverend Karen Hudson officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park. Mr. Phillips was born March 24, 1923, in Oakdale, Tennessee. He graduated from Oakdale High School and entered the US Army serving his country during WW II. His company, the Seven Hundred and fifty-second Engineering Corp invaded the Normandy Beach Head on the 6th day of the invasion. His company was awarded numerous citations for the services they provided. They were responsible for moving equipment and supplies behind enemy lines. He retired from American Telephone and Telegraph Company after over 43 years of service and was a member of Carraway United Methodist Church. Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by his parents Mary Belle and Elvin Young Phillips and 11 brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife Nan Blackwood Phillips; daughter, Robin Phillips Compton (Russell), of Pickens, SC; sons, Charles Gregory Phillips, of Reidsville, Michael Paige Phillips (Abiegale), of Siler City; grandchildren, Nathaniel Phillips, Ashley Compton, Courtney Phillips, Joshua Compton, Hollie Phillips, and Melinda Phillips; great-grandchildren, Kylie Compton and Dillon Phillips. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 pm Tuesday, at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Home prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Carraway United Methodist Church, 1301 16th Street, Greensboro, NC 27405.
