Obituary of Margaret Myers

Mrs. Margaret Hayes Myers, 90, formerly of Greensboro, died Friday, August 31, at the Levine Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, NC. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am Monday at Lakeview Memorial Park with the Reverend Rodney Mitchell presiding. Mrs. Myers was born June 1, 1922, in Greensboro to William M. and Zola Anne Spainhour Hayes. She was married for 66 years to the late Jesse W. Myers, Sr. residing in Greensboro until November 2005 when they established residence at the Laurels at Highland Creek in Charlotte. Margaret's life work was as a caring wife, mother, and homemaker. She was devoted to her family and spent her life caring for others. When she was a young teenager, her mother fell ill and became an invalid. Though still a youngster, Margaret assumed many of the responsibilities for cleaning, cooking, helping to care for her mother and her two younger sisters, and generally running the household. She married Jesse, the love of her life, at 17, became a mother for the first time at 19, and began maintaining her own warm, loving, nurturing household. When her mother passed away, she invited her father into her home and cared for him along with the rest of her family for the next 30 years until his death. As she and her husband Jesse grew into old age she continued to care for him, first on the farm near Greensboro, and then at the Laurels in Highland Creek where he died in 2006. She loved living on the farm with her family and taking great delight in harvesting, cooking, and canning vegetables from the garden. She was a thrifty homemaker, but still managed to set a sumptuous table, particularly when her children and grandchildren came home to visit. She was an excellent cook and most famous within her family for the lightest, most delicious biscuits to be found anywhere. After she moved to The Laurels at Highland Creek, her life changed dramatically. She found many new friends there and loved bingo, crafts, bible study, and church. She loved gospel music and enjoyed programs hosted by Bill Gaither. She was able to travel some and had great times visiting children and grandchildren in Spartanburg, Morganton, and Cary. She made several trips to Myrtle Beach and was thrilled to get up each morning to see the sun rise over the ocean. She also found time to read and maintain active relationships with her many out of town nieces through phone calls, mail, and visits and she loved to receive visits from her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was an angel on earth and will be truly missed by all who knew her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Herbert Hayes and Ed Hayes of Greensboro, and sisters Rachel Webster, Henrietta Dodson, and MaryLou Cole of Greensboro, and Ruby Simmons of Florida. Mrs. Myers is survived by sons Charles W. Myers and wife Laura of Morganton, and Jesse W. Myers, Jr. and wife Chloe of Charlotte, grandchildren Margaret M. Myers of Cary, Andrew H. Myers and wife Susan of Spartanburg, David Moses and wife Kotang of Morganton, and Jamie Cacella of Delaware, Ohio, and great-grandchildren Thomas and William Myers of Spartanburg and Michael and Emily Moses of Morganton. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 5:30 pm, Sunday at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Service. Flowers are welcome.
