Obituary of Frances Hartmann

Mrs. Frances Ann Gwyn Hartmann, 89, formerly of Greensboro, died Friday, February 17, 2012, at her daughter's home in Rock Hill, SC. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 25 at Guilford Memorial Park, with the Reverend Virginia Herring officiating. Family visitation and gathering will be held in the Fellowship Hall of Hinshaw United Methodist Church on High Point Rd. following the service. A lifelong resident of Greensboro, Mrs. Hartmann was born December 4, 1922, in Winston-Salem, NC to James and Bessie Gwyn. Shortly after her birth, the Gwyn family moved to Greensboro. Frances graduated from Greensboro Senior High School in 1940. She was married to the late Julius R. Hartmann, Sr., son of noted architect, Charles Conrad Hartmann, Sr. The Hartmann family lived in Sedgefield for many years. Frances was a past president of the Sedgefield Garden Club, the Sedgefield Women's Club, and a member of the Sedgefield Country Club. Following the death of the husband, Richard, Frances moved to the Adams Farm Community and began an active life as a volunteer for Cone Hospital and Children's Home Society. She received recognition and an award for outstanding services to children from the Children's Home Society in 2000. Prior to that Frances was featured in an article on "Spotlight on Volunteers" in the Greensboro News and Record. She stated, "I rock and feed the children, help change their diapers and generally spoil the babies. I love babies and contact with people at the hospital." Frances Hartmann was a member of Hinshaw United Methodist Church. She will always be remembered by the angel pins she wore everyday on either her sweater or blouse. When asked about them, she would respond, "These are my guardian angels." Frances Hartmann is preceded in death by her husband, Richard, and her son, Byron Hayden Hartmann. She is survived by her daughter, Ann Hartmann-Smith and her husband, Sumpter, of Rock Hill, SC; son Julius Richard Hartmann Jr. and wife Jenette of Trinity; son Donald Conrad Hartmann, and his partner Andrew DeFabo, of Greensboro; sister, Dorothy Cude, of Greensboro; 4 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers and by her request, memorials may be made either to the Children's Home Society of Greensboro or Hinshaw United Methodist Church.
