Obituary of Louella Smith

Kernersville-Louella Matthews Smith, 97, widow of Cyrus Paul Smith, died peacefully in her sleep on May 14, 2012. Graveside Funeral Services will be held at the Sedge Garden United Methodist Church Cemetery 1:00PM Saturday May 19, 2012 with Pastor Dave Cash and Dr. Ken Bradstock from Hospice officiating. Galatians 5: 22 & 23, The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forgiveness, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Louella was born January 27, 1915 and was the last surviving child and spouse of the large families of Charles Levi and Levia Vance Matthews and Jacob Thomas and Ida Blackburn Smith. Her entire life was spent in the Sedge Garden Community having been born in the 1859 Matthews homeplace on Old Salem Road, having graduated as Salutatorian from Sedge Garden School, and having reared her family at her Hastings Hill Road home. In addition to her husband and parents, she also was preceded in death by three youngest children, Patricia Smith Dibbi, Wallace Paul Smith, and Linda Smith Combs. Her independent style, positive attitude, and quiet nurturing spirit will be missed by all who knew her. Her strength, her optimism, and her loving nature stand as a significant example for her family. Survivors include her daughter Kay McEntire and Jerry of Kernersville; daughter-in-law Sandi S. Smith; grandchildren Forrest Gambrell of Kernersville, Erin and Marty Kangiser of Stockbridge, GA, Mark and Teresa Smith of Kernersville, Stephen and Marie Smith of Anderson, SC, Krista and David Des Champs of Wrightsville Beach, and Joel and Holly Combs of Charlotte; great-grandchildren Adam and Ryan Kangiser, Ashley and Lauren Smith, Megan and Jason Smith, Ella and Smith Des Champs, and Lauren, Katherine, and Owen Combs. She was "Aunt Pelly" to many nieces and nephews who will treasure memories of her and "Uncle Cy". The family will receive friends immediately following the service on Saturday in the church fellowship hall.
