Obituary of Thurman DuBose

Kernersville-Thurman A. DuBose passed away on Friday morning, November 15, 2013 at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem, N.C. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 2:30PM Thursday November 21, 2103 at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Monsignor West officiating. He was born Oct. 9, 1938 in Washington, D.C. to Edna and Daniel DuBose who, along with several siblings, preceded him in death. He was a graduate of Atkins High School, in Winston Salem, N.C., and attended Kittrell Junior College, in Kittrell, N.C., and Wilberforce University, in Wilberforce, OH. Thurman lived in Kernersville, N.C. with his wife of 38 years, Marlene Garlington DuBose. He attended Holy Cross Catholic Church, in Kernersville, where he was a member of the Parish Pastoral Council, Knights of Columbus (past Grand Knight of Council 8509) and chairperson of the Care Callers of Holy Cross. He was very involved in the community, working with the grassroots organization, Experiment in Self Reliance, and coaching youth basketball teams at Our Lady of Mercy and St. Benedict’s Catholic Schools in Winston Salem, N.C. Thurman had retired from car retail and Mortgage Loan businesses in the Triad area. Along with his wife Marlene, Thurman is also survived by his mother-in-law Hazel Garlington; four children, Thurman Johnson of Midland TX, Christopher DuBose of Greensboro, N.C., Christina DuBose of Kernersville, and Corwin (Cynthia) DuBose of Powder Springs, GA; two precious granddaughters, Chloe DuBose of Kernersville and Caitlyn DuBose of Powder Springs; a grandson, William Johnson, of Phoenix, AZ; a great granddaughter, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family. Visitation will be at Pierce Jefferson Funeral Home in Kernersville on Wednesday, November 20 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Holy Cross Catholic Church Building Fund or Room at the Inn of the Triad.
