I had the privilege of working with Don for a few short years and wish it could have been much longer. Among other wonderful traits, his kindness, intelligence, humor and insight will be greatly missed.
My heartfelt condolences go out to all who knew and loved him.

I worked with Don for approximately 16 years at UNCG in Information Technology. What I always remember about Don was that he was a kind, helpful person, with a subtle sense of humor. Don loved to attend outdoor music events, and I recall fondly a few great Jimmy Buffet concert events we all attended together! I will always laugh when I recall our mainframe versus PC discussions, especially in the context of information security. Don, you were correct... the mainframe community had solved most of the challenges, and then we went and destroyed all of the security perimeters that the good old Digital Equipment mainframes afforded us. I don't miss having to transport the LAT protocol though! You were a friend, scholar, gentleman, and I will miss you. Rest in peace sir.

Don was a night operator while he was a graduate student and we had the Academic Computer Center and its new VAX 780. I knew Don from that time on. Many of us enjoyed POETs during our times at UNCG, but it is in eating Indian food that I remember Don most. Once we got Indian food on Tate Street many of us were convinced that was the cuisine for computing people! Later when some of us scattered we met now and then for Indian lunch buffet at Saffron's. RIP Don. We remember you as one positive gentle person.

I worked with Don for ten years at UNCG. Always funny, smart, professional and supportive. He always encouraged me on “the road less traveled” and was willing to embrace change and new ideas in a culture that didn’t. I will miss that smile, his droll sense of humor and those red suspenders. Be free my friend and enjoy the music I know you are dancing to.

I remember early in my career Don acted as a mentor/sounding board for me. Always willing to talk and listen no matter when it was. He will be missed.

I hadn't seen Don in a number of years until back in August. We talked about his plans for retirement and reconnected briefly. His friendly smile and demeanor were unchanged. He will be sorely missed.

My deepest sympathy to Don's family and friends. I work at UNCG Library and the first time I met Don was at one of our "POETS" gathering at Old Town and we talked at lot and I really got to know him. He will be missed by so many folks on campus. May God be with you all at this time of sorrow.
