I am a Native Atlantan and '74 graduate of Oglethorpe University (OU). It was as students at OU beginning in 1970, that I met and am life long friends with Dan Wilkins , and subsequently feel I share an extended friendship with Dan's very dear friends, Chris & George Newman (the Newmans). Through the childhood photos of the Newman brothers posted here, I can so easily recognize those little boy faces from recollection of the men they grew to become. I recall my first time meeting of Chris & George. One might say, these were guys who knew how to make an entrance, and made sure one could not help but notice their persona was larger-than- life. Certainly, the fact that these two brothers were taller than your average "bear" would make them hard to forget the good looks as their adventures became the stuff of legendary chit-chat over the years. I recall first meeting George at Dan's house ... usually Chris was due to arrive or already there ...George's arrival is easily recalled , as he remains the only person I have met to date in whose passenger seat was a "Marlin" ( literally out the roof of his BMW , if there was a roof) ... and after time it seems as if more sailfish and marlins surfaced, as Dan's place began to take on the appearance of a beach house without the ocean. Truly there was a lot of history in the fish and solace derived from the ocean as a dominant force in George's life.... I could go on with thoughts and one special friendship I share with others in connection to George. One in particular holds a decades-long friendship and bond with George, and is undergoing medical treatment and quite possibly unable to respond at this time. Its always hard to know what to really say to someone who is grieving from the loss of a loved one. For me, I can personally identify as an "only daughter/only child" who lost her Father some years back. At that time I was especially sad because I felt my Dad's life was cut short ( at 65) not much older than George. I found comfort in the words of my dad's wise and older friend who said these words to me that I will share : [ " Jacqueline....in your Dad's 65 years, he had lived more life than men who live to be 100..he lived life his way with you as the center of his world , he saw life in panoramic vision which most men can only dream about and lived each day to the fullest ....I feel I'm a lucky man to be able to call him my good friend...for as one of the wisest men I have ever known you would be right if you considered your Dad lived and died at 65 as a legend and a man 120 years young " ]. Lisa, as the bond of fathers and their daughters go....those words mean more to me each passing day. I hope you can find comfort in a similar thought of George ( your Dad). I'm very sorry for your loss , and wish you peace. My prayers and thoughts are with you at one of the most difficult times of your life. Like others who have spoken in written words here, I too feel as though I know "Auntie Ruthie" , as I certainly have known of her through my 40 year friendship with Dan ( a friendship that expanded & especially includes Dan's Wife, Sharon). Its my clearest understanding George's Aunt Ruthie was fondly thought of by those who loved her best (i.e. George) in photos he kept close, and I hope she finds comfort in this thought. My prayers & thoughts are with you, with George's family and his closest & best friends.
God Bless.

I grew up in the same small town of Greensboro, NC as the Newman?s. My family lived a few blocks from the Newman?s family home.
Georges?s younger brother, Chris, was in my second grade class at Irving Park Elementary School.
We remained best of friends from then, until he passed away (and forever).
For years, I was single and lived in a home in the Atlanta area with lots of room and a large yard.
When Chris moved from his Carrboro, NC apartment he kept his Triumph motorcycle and Isotope catamaran sailboat parked at my home. He would stop by in his yellow GMC motor home and park at my house. Sometimes for a few days, sometimes for months.
Chris and I visited George often when George lived @ Riverbend Apartments and later a house on Peachtree Road, just south of Brookhaven, in Atlanta. Chris and I also took ?road trips? to visit George when he lived in Florida and California.
When Chris left his ranch in California, he came to stay at my home, and did so until he passed away.
A few years after Chris passed away; George came to Atlanta and asked if he could stay at my house for a while he was always welcomed (although the accommodation ratings would have been considerably less than Five Star). He ended up staying for more than a year. George and I my relationship morphed from my best friend?s older brother, to being very close friends; albeit it was ?tough love?.
I was blessed with two brothers in my family, and have lost one. I feel like I was also one of the Newman brothers (the short one)?. and I have lost my surrogate family.
I have no idea how to effectively offer my sincere condolences and prayers to his daughter Lisa and, the legendary, Auntie Ruthie, whose loss, whom I am sure I am sure, is exponentially greater than my own.
Please accept my heartfelt regrets and my acknowledgement of this monumental loss, to you surely, but also felt by more others than you could ever imagine.
And so it goes?..
Dan, Sharon, and Mary Kathleen Wilkins
