Obituary of Walter Summerville

Kernersville-Walter M. Summerville, III, 55, loving husband and father died November 7, 2012. Funeral Services to celebrate his life will be held 3:00PM Sunday November 11, 2012 at Kernersville First Christian Church. The family will visit with friends immediately following the service at the church. A native of Boone, NC, Walt was the son of Tucker Summerville and Walter M. Summerville, Jr. He was born August 2, 1957 and was a graduate of Admiral Farragut Academy Class of ’75. Walt graduated from Appalachian State University in 1979, and remained in Boone working as a photo journalist for the Watauga Democrat. He also served as a Volunteer Firefighter for the Boone Fire Department. He moved to Kernersville in 1987 to pursue a career in firefighting. As his career progressed Walt served as Lieutenant, Captain, District Commander, Battalion Chief, Assistant Chief, and currently was serving as Chief of the Kernersville Fire Rescue Department. Walt obtained the designation of Certified Fire Officer (CFO) on March 9, 2010 and Executive Fire Officer (EFO) on April 27, 2012. Survivors include his loving wife of 18 years Cheryl Summerville of the home; daughters Jennifer Gilliam and Brock of Gibsonville, and Emily Summerville and fiancé Kelsey Vaughn of Boone; granddaughter Brynn Gilliam; mother Tucker Summerville of Charlotte; father Walter M. Summerville, Jr. and Debra of Charlotte; sisters Elaine Jenkins, Debbie Fackrell and Keith, and Karen Shaw; and a host of nieces, nephews, the brother he never had Johnny Reese, extended family, and friends.
